New Home, Dusty Yard: What Comes After Construction?

We recently got a call from a customer — let's call him Jason — who had just moved into his brand-new home after relocating from the Midwest. As we were talking, his backyard crew was literally installing pavers and artificial turf while we spoke.

Jason told us, “Everything is dusty. The patio, the windows, the turf that’s going in — and we’ve got patio furniture that needs cleaning too.” He’d found us on Instagram and wanted to know what to clean, in what order, and how to get it all looking move-in ready without damaging any of the new surfaces.

We walked him through exactly how we handle new construction cleanups for patios, pavers, windows, turf, and furniture. We thought it would be helpful to share that same step-by-step approach here.

Before You Start: Timing and Prep After Construction

After a build, the biggest enemy is construction dust and grit. It gets into every crack and crevice, and if it’s not handled correctly, it can scratch glass, pavers, and furniture.

Here’s what we usually recommend before any deep exterior cleaning:

  • Wait until major work is done. If crews are still cutting pavers or doing masonry, hold off. New dust will undo your hard work.
  • Do a quick walkthrough. Look for leftover nails, screws, chunks of mortar, paint overspray, or silicone on windows and hard surfaces.
  • Plan your order. We typically go from highest to lowest: roof/gutters (if needed) → windows → walls → patios/pavers → turf → furniture.

Cleaning New Patios and Pavers Without Damage

With Jason, the pavers were just going in, so we advised waiting until the crew finished and any joint sand had set. New pavers can be sensitive to aggressive pressure washing and harsh chemicals.

Here’s the method we use to safely clean new patios and pavers:

  • Start dry. Use a leaf blower or soft broom to remove loose dust and debris. This reduces mud and prevents grit from scratching the surface.
  • Light pre-rinse. Gently rinse with a garden hose, pushing dirty water toward drains and away from the home’s foundation.
  • Use the right cleaner. For most post-construction grime, a mild paver-safe detergent is enough. Avoid strong acids unless you know the exact stone type and finish.
  • Soft washing over high pressure. On new installs, we lean on low pressure with proper cleaners rather than blasting the surface. Too much pressure can etch pavers or dislodge joint sand.
  • Final rinse and inspection. Rinse thoroughly, then check for hazy film, mortar spots, or efflorescence (white chalky deposits). These may need specialized treatment.

Window Cleaning After Construction Dust

Jason specifically mentioned his windows and glass doors were covered in dust. New construction dust is surprisingly abrasive, so technique really matters here.

This is how we safely tackle post-construction window cleaning:

  • Rinse first, always. We gently rinse the glass and frames to float off loose grit before touching the surface with any tool.
  • Use soft tools. A professional scrubber and squeegee with a mild, glass-safe soap works best. Avoid paper towels or anything rough.
  • Watch for stickers and overspray. Paint specks, silicone, or stickers may require specialty scrapers, used very carefully, to avoid scratching.
  • Clean the frames and tracks. Construction dust loves to sit in window tracks and weep holes. We brush and wipe these out so windows operate smoothly and drain correctly.

Artificial Turf: Getting New Grass Looking Fresh

Because Jason’s turf was being installed while we talked, we recommended a light cleanup once the crew finished and any infill settled. The goal is to remove dust without displacing the infill or damaging seams.

Our basic turf cleanup process looks like this:

  • Blow off debris. Use a leaf blower on a low setting to remove dust, leaves, and loose scraps from the install.
  • Gentle rinse. Lightly hose the turf to knock down remaining dust. Avoid strong, direct jets at seams.
  • Brush to lift fibers. Using a turf rake or stiff-bristled broom, brush against the grain to stand fibers up and even out the look.
  • Spot clean as needed. For muddy spots or spills, use a mild turf-safe cleaner and rinse thoroughly.

Patio Furniture and Other Exterior Surfaces

Jason had patio furniture waiting in the garage that he didn’t want to set out while everything was dusty. That’s smart — we usually recommend cleaning furniture after the heavy dust work is done.

Here’s how we typically handle common furniture types:

  • Metal frames: Rinse, then wash with a mild soap and soft brush. Rinse again and dry to prevent water spots or rust.
  • Plastic or resin: Similar approach, but we avoid harsh scrub pads that can dull the finish.
  • Outdoor cushions: Vacuum first, spot clean stains with fabric-safe cleaner, and allow full drying in the shade.
  • Wood or teak: Gentle scrub with a wood-safe cleaner, never high pressure, to avoid fuzzing or gouging the grain.

When to Call in a Professional Crew

With Jason, we offered what we offer most new-build homeowners: a custom exterior cleanup based on photos of the property. We ask for pictures of each area — backyard, patio, turf, and one picture of each side of the home for windows — and then build a quote based on square footage and surface types.

If you’re looking at your own new home and feeling overwhelmed by dust and debris, a professional team can bundle windows, turf, pavers, patios, and furniture into one visit, so you don’t have to juggle multiple contractors — or spend your first weekend in your new place wrestling with a pressure washer.

Whether you decide to DIY part of it or hand the whole project off to us, following the right order and using gentle, surface-safe methods will help your new home’s exterior look just as fresh as the day you got the keys.
