House Wash vs. Patio & Window Cleaning: What’s Included

House Wash or Patio & Window Cleaning? A Recent Call That Says It All

We recently got a call from a customer — let's call him Mark — who had used our exterior cleaning services before. This time, he wanted to “get the exterior of the home power washed,” plus both the front and back patios and even his patio furniture.

When we pulled up his last visit, we saw we’d done his exterior windows and a full wash of the front and backyard patios, including spraying down his furniture. But Mark remembered something different:

“That included the house, right? The exterior walls? I had a lot of cobwebs and dust, and they were gone after.”

That question opened the door to a really common confusion: What’s actually included in a house wash vs. a patio or window cleaning? And how do you know which package you really need?

What We Mean by a “House Wash”

When Mark said, “I just want a house wash,” he described exactly what most homeowners are looking for:

  • Cobwebs and dust on brick fascia and ledges
  • Dust and grime on exterior walls
  • Build-up in nooks, trim, and around light fixtures

In our world, a house wash is a top-to-bottom clean of your exterior walls and trim, not just a quick rinse. Typically, it includes:

  • Soft washing of siding or stucco: A low-pressure application of cleaning solution to safely remove dirt, mildew, and cobwebs without damaging surfaces.
  • Cleaning fascia, soffits, and ledges: Those little brick or stucco ledges Mark mentioned are dust magnets; we specifically target them.
  • Spot treatment of stains: Light staining from dirt, pollution, or organic growth is addressed wherever possible.
  • Rinse around windows, frames, and doors: We don’t detail the glass in a house wash, but frames and surrounding areas get rinsed clean.

A house wash is about making the whole envelope of the home look clean and refreshed, not just the walkways or glass.

What Patio & Hard Surface Washing Includes

On Mark’s previous visit, what he actually had done (according to our notes) was a patio and hard surface wash, plus windows. That service is focused below the walls:

  • Front and back patios: Concrete, pavers, or stone are pressure washed to remove dirt, dust, and surface stains.
  • Walkways and small landings: Any connected hard surface areas often get cleaned at the same time.
  • Patio furniture rinse: As we did for Mark, we spray down outdoor chairs, tables, and lounges to remove loose dust and cobwebs.

This is where pressure comes more into play. We adjust the pressure to the surface so we’re tough on grime but gentle enough to avoid damage. The key difference from a house wash is that we’re primarily focused on horizontal surfaces where you walk and sit.

What’s Included in Exterior Window Cleaning

Another point from Mark’s call: when we do exterior windows, we always clean more than just the glass. That can blur the lines in a homeowner’s memory and make it feel like a full house wash happened.

Our typical exterior window service includes:

  • Glass cleaning: Removing spots, streaks, and light buildup for a clear view.
  • Frames and sills rinse: We spray around the frames and sills, which knocks down cobwebs and dust in that area.
  • Spot cleaning of bug debris and bird droppings: Especially around lights and in corners near the windows.

As we explained to Mark, that’s likely why he felt like the house had been washed: “When we do windows, we spray down around the frames and stuff, so if there are any cobwebs there, we get it. But getting every inch of the house, that’s a dedicated house wash.”

How to Decide Which Exterior Cleaning Package You Need

When Mark called back, he was very clear by the end: “I want a house wash and then the windows washed, and then the deck and the patio and then the patio furniture hosed down.”

Here’s the simple decision process we walked him through — and you can use it too:

1. Look Up, Then Down

  • If the walls, fascia, and ledges look dusty or cobwebbed: You need a house wash.
  • If the patios and walkways look dingy or stained, but walls look okay: A patio/hard surface wash might be enough.

2. Check Your Glass

  • Cloudy windows or spots you notice from inside: Add an exterior window cleaning.
  • If you’re only bothered by dirt on frames/sills: A house wash will improve this, but for crystal-clear glass, you’ll still want the window service.

3. Think About How You Use the Space

  • Entertaining on the patio soon? Prioritize the patio and furniture wash so guests see a fresh, clean outdoor living area.
  • Listing your home for sale? Bundle house wash + windows + patio for maximum curb appeal.

Why We Sometimes Recommend an On-Site Look First

In Mark’s case, we offered to have a technician swing by to take a quick look before confirming everything. That’s not just a sales step — it helps us:

  • Confirm which surfaces need soft washing vs. pressure washing
  • Spot any delicate areas (aging stucco, peeling paint, loose mortar)
  • Make sure the quote matches the real scope, so there are no surprises

If you’re ever unsure what was done last time or what you truly need now, asking for a quick on-site assessment is often the smartest move.

Putting It All Together for Your Home

Here’s a quick way to think about our exterior cleaning services:

  • House wash: For walls, ledges, fascia, and overall “dusty house” look.
  • Patio/hard surface wash: For floors, decks, and walkways where you see grime or stains.
  • Exterior windows: For clear views and clean frames around the glass.

Just like we did for Mark, we can mix and match these into a single visit so you get exactly what you’re picturing — not just what’s on a generic price list. If you’re looking at your home and thinking, “I’m not even sure what I need, I just know it’s dirty,” that’s our cue to help you choose the right package.
